Frequently Asked Questions

What is Mastercard Automatic Billing Updater?

Mastercard’s Automatic Billing Updater is a service participating merchants can use to retrieve cardholder account changes, like new debit or credit card numbers, to ensure as little disruption as possible for your card-on-file transactions and recurring payments. Banner Bank credit and debit cards are automatically enrolled.

What are card-on-file and recurring payments?

  • Card-on-file transactions are processed using a card number you’ve stored with a merchant by creating an account and saving your card information with merchants like Uber, PayPal, digital wallets and online retailers.
  • Recurring payments are pre-authorized automated payments like those arranged with merchants for insurance premiums, gym memberships, utility payments or with those offering subscriptions like Netflix, Pandora, and Microsoft.

Will all of my payment information be automatically updated?

No. ABU is only available to participating merchants, and they can choose how often they check for updated payment information. To avoid late payments and penalties, you must check with your merchant to make sure your card information is updated.

Can you tell me which merchants participate?

No. We do not know which merchants participate or the frequency at which they choose to check for updated payment information. To avoid late payments and penalties, you must check with your merchant to ensure your payment information has been updated.

Can I stop a specific merchant from obtaining my updated card information?

No. If your intention is to cancel or revoke an authorization for an established recurring payment, you may request a stop payment to block future authorizations and payments with a merchant at the rate published in the current Banner Bank Schedule of Fees.

What if I had fraudulent recurring payments and I don't want that merchant to obtain my new card information?

You may elect to opt out of this service, which allows you to contact only the merchants you choose with your updated card information.

Can I opt out of this service?

Yes. You may request to opt-out of this service by contacting us at 800-272-9933 or visit any Banner Bank branch.
